What Is an Internship and Why Should I Get One?
An internship is a structured educational experience that allows students to apply classroom knowledge in a professional setting under the supervision of experienced professionals. Internships help students build career-ready skills, gain practical experience, and explore potential career paths before graduation. What Qualifies for Internship Credit?
To qualify for academic credit, an internship must provide meaningful, professional work that aligns with your business coursework and learning objectives.
Examples of work that generally does not qualify include:
- Answering phone calls and emails
- Filing and administrative office tasks
- Data entry
- Cold calling
- Independent contractor positions
- Running your own business
Internships should provide responsibilities comparable to the learning experience of an upper-level business course and be supervised by a qualified professional.
Please note: Final approval of internship eligibility is determined by Bauer faculty and staff administering Internship for Credit courses.
Who Is Eligible?
Students enrolling in an Internship for Credit course must:
- Be a junior or senior student with a declared Bauer major
- Secure an approved internship
- Submit the Internship for Credit required web form before the deadline
Internship courses are registration by permission only.

Start your internship search one semester before you plan to intern.
Beginning your search early gives you time to:
- Apply to multiple internships
- Prepare for interviews
- Secure an approved internship before enrollment deadlines

Important Information
Bauer minors and non-business degree seekers are not eligible to receive Internship for Credit. Students pursuing a Bauer minor should complete traditional coursework rather than experiential learning for minor credit.
