Private: Z- Old Internships for Credit Page »

Here are the steps necessary to count an internship for academic credit.

Step 1: Secure the internship

  • Please note that students who run their own businesses or are independent contractors (aka independent advisors, independent associates) do not qualify for Internships for Credit. Multi-level marketing roles or door-to-door sales can not be counted as Internship for Credit. Internship for Credit is based on Experiential Learning, where a student receives instruction from a supervisor similar to what they would learn in the classroom but in a work environment. The job duties that are eligible for Internship for Credit will be determined by the Rockwell Career Center and/or the Instructor of Record for the Internship for Credit.
  • Offer letters must contain the following or have an addendum from the employer:
    • Student Details: Student’s full legal name.
    • Employer Information: The official company name, along with the physical address where you will be working.
    • Position Details: Your official job title and a brief but detailed description of your duties and responsibilities.
    • Employment Dates: Exact start and end dates of the job.
    • Hours: The exact number of hours you are expected to work each week. (Note: It must specify exact numbers like “20 hours” rather than just stating “Part-Time”).
    • Supervisor Info: The name and contact information (email and/or phone) of your direct supervisor. (Don’t know your supervisor yet? List the person who sent you the offer letter.)
    • Remote/Hybrid Work: If you will be working remotely, the letter must clearly state this and indicate the physical company address that your employment is tied to.
    • Signature: The name, title, and signature of an employer representative authorized to hire or supervise you.

Step 2: Check your eligibility to see if you qualify for earning credit

  • Must be a business student
  • Must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. (NOTE: CPT requires a 3.00 or higher GPA)
  • Completion of BUSI 3302
  • Internship hours worked must total at least 160 hours, 80 of which must be in the semester in which the student receives credit.

No Retroactive Credit: To receive credit for an internship, a student must enroll in an internship course prior to (or while) undertaking the work. No credit may be given, retroactively, for internship work undertaken in the past that is now finished. Contact a Career Counselor if you have questions.

Step 3: Complete Application Process

If you meet the eligibility requirements complete the webform at https://www.bauer.uh.edu/InternshipAcademicCredit/

Your Academic Advisor will check your eligibility for academic credit and forward the form to the Rockwell Career Center. The RCC will review your application materials for minimum qualifications and inform you of your status by email. This process can take 5-7 business days once class registration is open.  Between semesters, we will hold your application until registration begins. You will receive an e-mail notifying you whether your application has been approved. If approved, the RCC will enroll you in the course.

Step 4: You must Pay for the Internship Course

The internship for-credit course is billed as a 4000-level business course. It is graded on an S/U basis (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) and does not affect your GPA.
UH Billing dates can be found here.
