Make the Road New York (www.maketheroadny.org) is a non-profit organization that builds the power of Latino and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. We have over 24,000 members and operate six community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island, Brentwood, Long Island; and, White Plains, Westchester.
The Human Resources Department serves the Make the Road States umbrella which includes, in addition to New York, Connecticut, Nevada, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Description: The Human Resources Intern will assist the HR department in the day to day operation and will learn about human resources management.
Purpose of the project: To provide real-life experience and on-the-job training in the Human Resources department of a large non-profit organization
We pride ourselves in providing interns a high quality internship program that focuses on leadership building skills. Interns are held to high standards and will gain hands-on experience in a structured and well supported environment. They will become a part of an inspiring group of leaders and volunteers dedicated to empowering Latinx communities. During the first week of their internships, interns complete a Goals and Learning Plan to help interns focus their efforts and get a meaningful experience.
By the end of the opportunity interns will have deepened their knowledge of popular education and will have developed teaching and group facilitation skills.
Interns will learn about:
- Human Resources 101– Learn about the top 10 do’s and don’ts of the department and the field.
- Human Resources Document Retention and Confidentiality – Learn about the importance of paper trail, how it should be filed and, who should have access to the information
- Conflict and Resolution – Learn about managing different personality and how to create neutral ground where the diversity of all can cohabitate
- Project Management – Learn about the different projects that are managed in the department; how to do project design analysis using the logic model; what it takes to effectively oversee a project from beginning to end.
- Team management and effective teamwork– Learn about collaborative working styles and best practices for nonprofit organizations.
- Diversity Management – Learn about non-profit organizational culture, and how create assessments and recommendations remaining respectful to each individual culture
- Feedback, Feedforward and evaluation
Tasks and Responsibilities but not limited to:
- Assist with EE pay notices and payroll reports
- Assist with job ad postings
- Assist with creating soft and hard EE files
- Assist with benefits management
- Prepare welcome packages for new hire
- Assist with managing various shared databases
- Participate in planning and attend staff meetings and trainings
- Participate in different projects, at different level, whenever necessary
- Other tasks and projects as assigned
Desired time commitment: Minimum 20 hours a week – schedule will be determined upon selection of the intern.
Internship Commitment: At least 6 weeks
- Familiarity with, and commitment to, human rights and social justice issues
- 1 to 2 years of administrative exposure or experience
- Basic knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Strong interest in and commitment to working with the Spanish speaking/ immigrant community through the lens of nonprofit Operations in Human Resources
- Bilingual (Spanish/ English)
- Readiness and desire to work autonomously and on team driven projects
- Comfortable with exposure to a fast pace work environment which shifts priorities to attend to what matter the most.

Location: Currently the internship will be done remotely
Supervision: The Human Resources team will provide the interns with professional guidance in the areas of Human Resources. The intern will receive support and supervision structured as follows:
● Weekly work plan reviews
● Evaluation and Feedback
● Ongoing one-on-one support meetings & check-ins with project supervisors.
● In addition to the above, the supervisor is available to the intern for guidance as needed.
