The SSM Health Summer Administrative Internship offers a paid 12-week internship experience in SSM ministries in three of our regions in 2021. You will help with key projects to improve health services for the people in the communities we serve, while gaining valuable experience and knowledge of healthcare operations and delivery in a compassionate and transformational organization.

The 2021 Host Sites and the sampling of projects are listed below. As you apply, please upload a cover letter, indicating the host site that you are interested in for the Summer Internship (12 weeks).

Southern Illinois Good Samaritan, Mt Vernon, St. Mary Hospital Centralia:

  • Healthcare Transformation: Department/Programs

  • Record & Retention

  • Surgical Services

  • OR12 Project OR Improvements

  • Medical Group: Primary Care compensation redesign | ACO success | Achieving our KPIs

Wisconsin Dean Health Service Company:

Support vendor management team completing vendor scorecards in alignment with SLAs/vendor contracts, refinement of templates used to solicit vendor responses, reporting and summarizing vendor cost information and support active vendor negotiations, where needed.

Wisconsin Dean Health Plan:

  • Research into Cultural & Linguistic Access (CLAS) Standards requirements/implementation for SSM health plan provider networks in WI and MO/IL

  • Research relative to requirements for National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA) requirements regarding CLAS Standards and Cultural Competency requirements in support of Network Management’s provider networks oversight to ensure provider compliance with these requirements

  • Delivery of reporting/presentation on requirements for CLAS Standards/NCQA Requirements by summer’s end to Network Management’s leadership, along with identification of gaps identified through provider networks review

System Office – St. Louis:

The SSM Health Community Health Intern will work and learn alongside Community Health staff.

Experiences will include:

  • Active participation in system-wide community health meetings

  • Assisting regional staff in the conducting and preparing of Community Health Needs Assessments

  • Learn to link organizational mission and values with IRS community benefit regulations

  • Develop and present one professional development session based upon candidate’s distinctive skills/insights

St. Louis Nursing Administration:

  • EnFit Project (interprofessional project with emphasis on patient safety) Hazardous Drug (interprofessional project with emphasis on team mate safety)

  • Identify relevant articles and review evidence related to nursing practice and policies

  • Attend meetings and assist with minutes Create and proof-read flyers and tip sheets regarding nursing practice changes

  • Research and assist with setting up nursing staffing models for hospital units

St. Louis Mission Integration:

  • Work and learn alongside health care mission leaders. Experiences will include:

  • Active participation in meetings with mission leaders throughout the health system

  • Develop key skills in formation activity planning and presentation

  • Develop and present one formation activity based upon candidate’s distinctive skills/insights.

  • Participate in Mission Action Team activities and planning

  • Attend ethics committee meetings

  • Learn to link theological principles with community health strategies and tactics

St. Louis System Office Finance:

  • Support for the System Finance and Accounting Teams

  • Rotational opportunity in key areas including finance, accounting, treasury, reimbursement, managed care and others.

  • Support for Merger, Acquisition and Divestiture activity including assisting with the development of robust templates, reports and key process outlines to aid in the centralization and standardization of activity.

  • Exposure to System and regional transactions and processes.

St. Louis System Office Infection Prevention

  • Statistical review including predictive modeling for HAIs (CLABSI, CAUTI, SSI)

St. Louis System Office System Real Estate:

The System Real Estate and Facilities team oversees and manages the entire real estate portfolio of SSM Health. Our intern will participate in many roles, including primarily:

  • Helping us integrate and/or perform quality control upon the integration of the lease admin software, depending upon where we are in the process at that time;

  • Assisting with tracking background information on existing expired leases and helping us resolve them; and

  • performing due diligence on complex, current real estate projects across the system.

St. Louis St. Mary’s Hospital:

  • Diversity Equity and Inclusion Education

  • 5 Star CMS Gap Review and Action Planning

  • Magnet Designation Information Gathering & Action Planning

  • Wound Care Center HBO Development Construction and growth

St. Louis St. Clare Hospital:

  • Partner with the ministry executive team to develop the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA).

  • Facilitate conversations internally and with external community partners

  • Identify and define highest needs in our community

  • Develop a focused plan for improving the health of our community over a 3-year period

  • Support the development of 2022 volume budgets

  • Work with strategy and business development to submit volume projections for 2022 calendar year

  • Work with hospital leaders to understand their business trends to develop the forecast

  • Develop business plans for new growth

  • Work with strategy and business development to determine return on investment for business proposal, which includes modeling volume, reimbursement, expense, and marketing needs

  • Perform data analysis on labor cost and associated volumes to perform staffing to demand recommendations

  • Partner with hospital throughput committee to identify bottlenecks and opportunity for streamlined approaches to patient movement

St. Louis Medical Group:

The Administrative Intern for the St. Louis Medical Group will support Medical Group initiatives including:

  • Implementation of Walk-In/Express Clinics co-located with Primary Care

  • Implementation and design of centralized nurse triage for Primary Care and Cardiology

  • Design and implementation of standardized phone scripting for specialty practices

  • Design and Implementation of Centralized Scheduling for Specialties

  • Planning for SmartSquare (staffing model) implementation for the Medical Group

St. Joseph Hospital Lake St. Louis:

Working with members of our campus leadership and Continuous Improvement team, a Summer Intern would have an opportunity to support campus throughput initiatives including the implementation of campus portal boards. The Summer Intern would also be asked to become familiar with and implement improvement initiatives related to emergency preparedness.

St. Joseph Hospital St. Charles:

  • Stewardship Committee Membership, specifically non-labor cost savings initiatives.

  • Work Place Violence- Identification of root cause analysis, creation of tactics to improve incidence of workplace violence, and leadership through implementation.

  • Throughput Committee Membership-Development for transfers and surgical volume acceptance.

St. Louis DePaul:

  • Assist in the development of a robust business plan to increase growth in ambulatory services including but not limited to Pain Management, Vascular Institute, Sleep Services, and the Complex Care Clinics

  • Develop business case for expansion of Vascular Institute

  • Reestablish a monthly operational review process (productivity and non-labor) within the ministry

  • Assist in designing and implementing a revamped cardiac surgery program that will deliver exceptional health care within our ACRA realignment model.

  • Oncology project management

  • Business plan development

  • Research/develop outcome based medical directorship-based payment

  • Community health planning or grant writing

St. Louis Cardinal Glennon

Potential Projects include:

  • Assist with market share analysis -referring physician analysis and working with business development to identify key physicians

  • Hospital space planning

  • Urgent care business planning

  • Clinical service line planning for neonatology and neurosciences

  • Final projects are TBD depending on needs at time of intern start.

St. Louis University Hospital

  • Develop (in conjunction with TOP team) operational transition plans for departments that are moving into new spaces

  • Participate in project management for new ASC

  • Perform data analysis for key service lines to advise on future growth -Facilitate work groups for new project

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with preceptor and/or members of leadership team on assigned projects related to strategy, operations and/or other assigned/identified projects. Completes special projects as delegated by preceptor.

  • Engages in research, data analysis, project management and/or administrative assistance for initiatives and projects, as assigned. Contributes actively by collaborating with other team members and providing input, recommendations and constructive feedback.

  • Performs department-specific duties and responsibilities in a training capacity. Identifies and uses internal and external support/resources to accomplish work goals.

  • Performs work assignments in support of ministry and/or departmental goals in an accurate and timely manner. Seeks ways to continuously improve processes and outcomes and effectively communicates proposals for solutions.

  • Ensures positive internal and external customer relations by providing prompt response to customer requests, maintaining confidentiality and communicating effectively.

  • Assist in the development of presentations and/or strategic communication to support department and/or entity wide strategic initiatives.

  • Meets with administrative and management staff to gain a better understanding of each area and attends various administrative, managerial and medical staff meetings, as invited.

  • Observe and learn aspects of healthcare operations, strategy and other relevant areas, with guidance from the preceptor.

  • Seeks professional development feedback from administrators, mentors and other colleagues.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • Official transcript and documentation of enrollment in a related Bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university in their Junior or Senior year

EXPERIENCE

  • No experience required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.

  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.

  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.

  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.

  • Frequent keyboard use/data entry.

  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.

  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.

  • Rare climbing.
