The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History (GLI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to K–12 history education while also serving the general public. The Institute’s mission is to promote the knowledge and understanding of American history through educational programs and resources. At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. Drawing on the 70,000 documents in the Gilder Lehrman Collection and an extensive network of eminent historians, the Institute provides teachers, students, and the general public with direct access to unique primary source materials. Position Summary
The internship will provide a range of duties for the candidate looking for experience working in the field of not-for-profit accounting. The position will work closely with members of the Finance Team including; CFO, Finance & HR Associate, and Finance Assistant. The internship will run for a fifteen-week period during the Spring 2021 term with an average of ten hours per week at $15/hour.
Roles and Responsibilities (including, but not limited to)
- Audit Preparation – work closely with the CFO and Finance & HR Associate to prepare financial schedules, spreadsheets, and other documentation for the Institute’s annual audit
- Financial Reporting – assist CFO with the preparation of monthly and quarterly reports to staff on revenue, expenses, and staff project time allocation
- Legal Records Maintenance: work with the Finance Assistant in regards to the maintenance of legal documents including contracts and agreements
- Bookkeeping: Enter accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions into QuickBooks
- Other Projects: as needed
Required Skills
- Studying for Bachelor’s in Accounting, Arts Administration, or related field
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail
- Interest in nonprofit organizations and/or American history
- Experience with QuickBooks a plus
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- Quick thinker with demonstrated problem-solving skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
