6 Tips to Have a Successful Career Fair

The Bauer Career Fair is this Friday, September 15 from 12PM – 4PM at the UH Hilton.

There are 150 companies here to talk with Bauer students. Here are 6 tips to help you have a successful day at the Business Career Fair!

1. Make sure your resume is ready

Hopefully you had the chance to attend our Resume Kickoff event last week. If not check out the Bauer Resume Templates (BBA) (MBA/MS) that can be found at HireBauer.com. This is the preferred format for our students because it was approved by employers. This format makes it easier to find the information that employers need to move you closer to your goal of getting hired.

Our office will also be open for Drop Ins for BBA students Monday – Thursday from 1PM – 4PM if you would like to get your resume reviewed in 15 mins.

2. Download the Career Fair Plus app

Start doing your research now and planning your route around the UH Hilton using the Career Fair Plus app. The app includes a list of all the companies scheduled to come to the Bauer Career Fair along with a map that you can mark with your favorites. Do not wander around the Career Fair! It is too big to go in without a plan.

3. Do your research on the companies that are attending

Now that you have downloaded the Career Fair Plus app, you can take a look at the 150 companies that are attending and do a bit of research on each company. You want to be prepared to know a bit about the company and ask the recruiters questions while you are talking to them. You should not “wing” your interactions with recruiters if you are serious about applying for an Internship or Full-Time Job with the company. Bauer Career Gateway gives you access to tools to research the companies you are interested in.  Check out the resources under External Links on the homepage of Bauer Career Gateway.

The Career Fair Plus app does have information about all the companies that are attending that you can refer to in a pinch.

4. Pack Light

What should you bring to the career fair? Not much as you will be responsible for holding all items you bring with you. We would not recommend carrying a backpack or large purse – there is no place to leave these items in the UH Hilton. You want to be able to move around the ballrooms freely, pass out resumes and shake hands with recruiters. You can leave your backpack in one of the lockers insider Cemo Hall, Second Floor if needed. All you would need is a padfolio or folder to carry your resumes and documents and possibly a small purse.

It is recommended to bring at least 10-20 copies of your resume (more if you plan on talking to more companies). You should also have a pen/pencil and a notepad for any note and a padfolio or folder to carry your documents.

5. Come and get your Skip The Line Wristband to attend the Career Fair

The Bauer Career Fair is a Bauer Exclusive event (Bauer Majors ONLY) so you must check in before you will be allowed into Career Fair. The line to check in can get long but you can get a wristband to #SkipTheLine by checking in early. Wristbands will be available for pick up Wednesday 9/13 and Thursday 9/14 at the Rockwell Career Center. Stop by our office in Cemo Hall, Second Floor 8AM – 5PM to get your wristband early and show it at the door to #SkipTheLine at student check-in.

6. Dress for Success & Comfort

This is a Professional Attire event and students who are not dress appropriately may be turned away. If you are unsure if you have the proper attire for Career Fair check out our posts on What to Wear and Frequently Asked Questions about Professional Dress. Also you will be on your feet for a few hours so comfortable shoes are also recommended.

The Rockwell Career Center also has a Suit Closet that includes suits and separates for men and women. The suits are available on loan for interviews, career fairs, and other professional events at no cost to you. The college even covers dry cleaning fees! We also have padfolios available at our front desk to borrow for events and interviews.  To borrow a suit from the closet, you can visit our office in Cemo Hall, Second Floor from 8AM – 5PM.
