Strategies for a Productive Career Fair Experience

The Bauer Career Fair is this Friday, February 9th at the UH Hilton from 12PM – 4PM. There are 101 companies that want to talk with Bauer students. Here are some tips to help you at the Business Career Fair!

1. Update your resume

Check out the Bauer Resume Templates (BBA) (MBA/MS) that can be found at HireBauer.com. This is the preferred format for our students because it was approved by employers. This format makes it easier to find the information that employers need to move you closer to your goal of getting hired.

Our office is open for Drop Ins (for BBA students only) Monday – Thursday from 1PM – 4PM if you would like to get your resume reviewed.

2. Download the Career Fair Plus app

Do not wander around the Career Fair! The Career Fair Plus app includes a list of all the companies scheduled to come to the Bauer Career Fair along with a map of where the company is located in the UH Hilton.

3. Research the Companies at the Fair

Use the Career Fair Plus app to explore the list of 101 companies attending and begin your research! You want to be prepared to know a bit about the company and ask the recruiters questions while you are talking to them. Avoid improvising your conversations with recruiters, especially if you’re serious about applying for an internship or full-time position with the company.

4. Ask the Recruiters Questions

A 1:1 conversation with a recruiter is also a great way to make connections. You do not want to just talk about yourself; you also want to stand out for the recruiter to remember you. The person that you are speaking with works at the company so you can ask about their experiences. Possible questions may look like:

  • What do you like about (Company)?
  • What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in your role or at (Company)?
  • What is your favorite thing about your job?
  • On a typical day, what does (open role) do?
  • What kind of person is most successful at (Company)?
  • What would be a great next step to take after meeting you here?

5. Pack Light

What should you bring to the career fair? We would not recommend carrying a backpack or large purse – there is no place to leave these items in the UH Hilton. You want to be able to move around the ballrooms freely, pass out resumes and shake hands with recruiters. There are lockers inside Cemo Hall, Second Floor if needed. All you would need is a padfolio or folder to carry your resumes, a notepad, pen/pencil and possibly a small purse. We recommend bringing 10-15 copies of your resume (more if you plan on talking to more companies).

6. Dress for Success and Comfort

This is a Professional Attire event and students who are not dressed appropriately may be turned away. If you are unsure if you have the proper attire for Career Fair check out our posts on What to Wear and Frequently Asked Questions about Professional Dress. You will be on your feet for a few hours so wear comfortable shoes.

The Rockwell Career Center has a Suit Closet that includes suits and separates for men and women. The suits are available on loan for interviews, career fairs, and other professional events at no cost to you. We also have padfolios available at our front desk to borrow for events and interviews.  To borrow a suit from the closet, visit our office in Cemo Hall, Second Floor from 8AM – 5PM.
